Car alarms are crucial
New or old, it’s a good idea to protect your car with an alarm. Find out how to get one fitted.
What is a car alarm?
At the simplest level, they’re a group of sensors that will trigger a siren if they’re tripped.
For example, if an alarm is attached to the doors or windows and they’re opened while the alarm’s on, the siren will go off.
You can even choose an alarm that has an immobiliser, which prevents the car from moving if somebody breaks in.
Some alarms even have a tracking device, so you can recover your car after it’s been stolen.
Why do I need an alarm?
There’s no legal requirement to fit an alarm in your car, it’s really up to you whether or not to get one.
Here are a few more reasons why you should:
- You could cut the cost of your car insurance. Many insurers will offer cheaper premiums if a car is alarmed because there’s less chance of it getting stolen.
- Your car will be protected from thieves, whether they’re trying to steal the car or its contents.
Getting the right alarm
Alarms come already fitted in many newer cars, but if you’ve got an older model you may need to get one put in.
Look for an alarm that’s approved by Thatcham – they regularly publish a list of alarms which meet their safety standards.

How do I get one fitted?
You’ll need someone skilled to fit the alarm so that it’s done properly. Try to find an installer approved by the Vehicle Systems Installation Board (VSIB).
And once it’s installed, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on having your alarm serviced.
